課程概述

This course is intended for students who need practice in basic grammar and usage, sentence structure, punctuation, summarizing and paragraph writing. A variety of skills will be developed, including vocabulary expansion, idiomatic expression and correct usage, effective sentence structure, and writing coherent and complete paragraphs. This semester we will also put another different element in the syllabus: creative writing. There will be an in-class vocabulary quiz each week, so the students have to get prepared before coming to class. Each student will have to read a novel of his/her own choice and submit four summaries (divisions decided by the student) this semester even though these book summaries will not be graded.

課程要求

Good attendance is mandatory in that many assignments will be written in class. Missed in-class work cannot be made up at a later time. I will not accept late papers or assignments. It is your responsibility to insure that you know exactly when the assignments are due. Missed assignments will receive a grade of zero. By respect for the teacher and your fellow students, you will be asked to arrive in class on time. All at-home assignments must be typed. All writing assignments will be assessed for both content and grammar, including spelling. Cheating or plagiarizing is an offense that I take seriously. A student caught cheating or plagiarizing on a written assignment or an exam will receive a grade of zero for this assignment/exam. If the offense is repeated, the student will receive a failing grade for the course.
